VMFA's "Hollywood Costume" cont'd - A Photo Journey: Behind the Seams

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition is now on view through Feb. 17, 2014

by Janel St. John

I'm a seamstress. I hestitate to say fashion designer because I use patterns more often than not and my sketches rarely make it to reality. So of course, I was absolutely and totally engrossed in the inspiration, craft, materials and fashion design details included in the VMFA Exhibition, Hollywood Costume. It is a virtual Designer's Heaven!

So here's a few close up shots of some amazing craftmanship and ingenuity! Among them are images from Elizabeth: The Golen Age, and Nicole Kidman's costume from Moulin Rouge. Vanessa Redgrave wore the gown with the train covered in pumpkin seeds for the 1967 film Camelot. Who knew pumpkins seeds could be so couture! Wool and silk were also used in the dress, designed by John Truscott. The film received an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. And Spider Man, of course. I even loved the remake of the remake! Want to see more? Visit VMFA! ENJOY!

"I was taken for fittings where the cutters, seamstresses and embroiderers worked, about one hundred skilled men and women. I saw the wedding dress for Guinevere with hundreds of finely crocheted woolen spiderwebs, with tiny shells sewed into the center of each and bleached seeds instead of pearls hanging from each corner." -Vanessa Redgrave
